Susan Fowler Bouquet Preservation

When Mr LG & I married in April 2008 we had a wonderful display of spring flowers in shades of blue and lilac in tubs which we had planted specially for the occasion, as well as gorgeous tall table vase centrepieces which looked all the more stunning for the lilac coloured water in them. My bouquet was especially pretty with roses, scillia and other flowers following the blue/lilac theme. The day after the wedding I took the bouquet apart so that I could dry the more robust flowers but unfortunately the more delicate blooms were unsaveable. I wish I'd known about the service that Susan Fowler offers before our wedding as my dried roses are now rather sad looking!

I specialise inpreserving any fresh flower, brides bouquet, buttonholes, corsages etc infactany flower from any memorable occasion. They are dismantled carefully thenprepared for pressing, preserving and drying. They take from 4-6 weeks to dry then after consultation with the client,are reassembled and laid on fabric backing of silk, satin, taffeta etc beforebeing framed. Variety of designs, newunique contemporary collage style available including the new “seaside theme” design.

I'm not one to pay others to do something that I can quite easily do myself, so when I received a sales call yesterday from a company claiming to be in receipt of partial Government Initiative Funding to help businesses like mine to set up e-commerce shops on Facebook, with a small contribution from myself of just £99 I decided to investigate a little. I could find no mention of such an initiative on the search engine, however I did find a link to a Facebook App where it's possible to set up your own Facebook Shop for free if you have a business page there. When I asked the sales company by email for the details of this Government Funding I was called back to be given the information - now call me cynical but if the company isn't prepared to put the information in an email then I smell a bit of a rat! My apologies to said company if I've got this wrong and they are indeed in receipt of this funding, but I've spent today setting up my very own Facebook Shop - not too fiddly and I'm very glad I hung onto the £99!

It's not fully stocked yet, but have a browse, I'll be adding more items when my broadband finally sorts its act out and gives me more speed! Whilst you're over there why not 'Like' our page too if you don't already!

Breakthrough Breast Cancer

Last year I became aware of a lovely blogger through Twitter, and other fantastic #groovymums (#groovingmums). Sometimes we all struggle to cope with life on a day to day basis and the #groovymums are a great bunch to connect with - some days it's possible to offer support to someone who's not having a great day, other days someone might offer you support, or a blog post from one of them might cheer you up and make you realise that you're not alone. Each week Kate suggests things that you might do or think about to help you to get your groove back - some weeks you might not be able to join in, or it's not for you, or you might find she inspires you to do something you've never before considered. I haven't been particularly great at joining in as I'm often up to my eyeballs in work, but I do try to read the blog posts of others as often as I can.

Last week Kate asked for support for raising awareness of Breakthrough Breast Cancer by getting other bloggers to write about a woman who matters to them, which I am more than happy to do.

My relationship with my mother has not always been an easy one and as a teenager I didn't fully appreciate everything that she did and went through to keep the fabric of family life together. She married a widower with four sons when I was six, and they ranged in age from six to eighteen - which as a mother myself now with two sons of eighteen and nearly sixteen I can see was a mammoth task! I doubt that any of us made life easy for her and I know that I resented the time and effort she put into the boys. We were never the sort of mother/daughter partnership who played with make up and hair - mum never really had the time to spend on herself with five kids, a husband and a house to look after!

I see now that she did an incredible job under very difficult circumstances and although we don't always see eye to eye even now, she is very much a good friend to me, and I hope I am to her. Women of my parents generation don't seem to have had the kind of friendships and support networks that we do, that they could turn to to have a bit of a gripe now and then or to receive an encouraging few words from to help them through the bad days. I am very grateful to all my friends, both long standing from childhood and newer through blogging and social media such as Twitter, as well as my mother who continues to hold the fabric of our family life together!

Sailing/Beach Theme Board

Last Monday I went to a trade fair to source new items and inspiration, one theme seemed very strong in particular, and that was a nautical theme. If you and your partner are looking to have a nautical themed wedding perhaps this mood board will give you some ideas.

Your ceremony and reception venue can be decorated relatively cheaply with all sorts of sailing and beach themed items, from shell and driftwood hearts, shell and leaf wreaths, flag bunting and buoys, perhaps with a few photographs dotted around of the happy couple in these pale blue distressed wooden frames.

Why not use beach hut coat hooks to hang table cards from or display them in these long photo frames - then afterwards use them in your home!

Instead of flowers as centrepieces maybe have different tall wooden lighthouses, life buoy tealight holders and instead of table diamonds or confetti scatter a mixture of shells over the tables.

For favours how about beach hut money boxes, glass starfish tealight holders, buckets filled with seashell chocolates, shell topped tins or nautical chests filled with confectionery.

Sussex Love Bug

This week it's my pleasure to introduce a company close to us geographically in West Sussex and brings back some memories for me. Many years ago I had a boyfriend who drove an old yellow Beetle which was so noisy you could hear it for miles! More recently when I married nearly four years ago one of my best friends drove me to Horsham Town Hall in her new and pristine bright red Beetle. There's a zebra crossing on the way to the Town Hall which on a Saturday morning is rarely free of pedestrians crossing from the car park to the shopping area, so after waiting for around five minutes for countless pedestrians and with just minutes to spare, Kate finally leant out of the car window and yelled that she was coming through so that the bride wasn't late for the wedding!

Every now and again lifechanges for the better. Kelly was made redundant in 2011 and rather thanletting it get her down, she and her husband, web developer, Joss, decided toembark on a new chapter. During her friendswedding in the Sussex countryside she got chatting to some fellow guests aboutgetting into the wedding business and so the idea of becoming a wedding chauffeur with a difference was born. They wanted something different, a carthat would capture hearts.

So many weddings thesedays are inspired by times gone by and so it was that Belle became a VintageWedding Love Bug, Joss and Kelly’s new pride and Joy. Her first outing in Aprilthis year will be for a close friend of the couple, Kelly will be bridesmaid,Joss will be driving.

Joss got busy searchingfor the perfect love bug, when he saw Belle, it was love at first sight. Belleis a 1960’s Chalk White VW Beetle and oozes vintage style. The couple haverecently carried out restorations and replaced the interior so she is now readyto carry beautiful brides to their ceremony.

Kelly and Joss Wickson, were married 7 years ago at Brightonregistry office, followed by a reception in Kirdford, near Arundel, it was themost magical day, so they know how important it is to you to get everythingabsolutely perfect.

Belle prides herself in making the journey to your big day, be ita church, civil ceremony, registry office or hotel, as perfect as possible. Aslong as it’s in Sussex, Belle can take you there.

Act F.A.S.T.

How many of us have seen and remember the F.A.S.T. campaign on TV on spotting the symptoms of a stroke?

Facial weakness - Can they smile?
Arm and leg weakness - Have they stumbled or fallen? Can they lift both arms?
Speech problems - Do they sound slurred?
Time to call 999 - The sooner they reach hospital & vital treatment the better chance of recovery.

I do, although I haven't seen them for a while. A week ago on Sunday my father had a stroke. As he used to be a GP he recognised the symptoms although he struggled to call out to my mother. Luckily when she went into the room she saw that he was having difficulties, recognised the symptoms and called for an ambulance. As he reached hospital extremely quickly he was able to receive vital treatment and is now making amazing progress.

He is probably the most amazing man I know. Last year at 85 he stopped playing tennis once a week as he needed a hip replacement, and this stroke has put the kibosh on his playing 9 holes of golf weekly (well, for the time being at any rate, although at the rate he's recovering who knows for how long!). The fact that he is fit and active and eats healthily has undoubtedly been in his favour.

Please do share this simple information with others in case it comes in handy one day to help someone else receive treatment F.A.S.T.!

A huge thank you to the paramedics, staff at Worthing A&E and on Botolph's ward as well as the occupational therapists who are now helping his recovery at home, and the 999 operator who stayed on the line talking to my mother until the ambulance arrived!

Port Out Starboard Home (P-O-S-H)

Isn't it funny how a certain phrase, sight or smell can transport you back years? Port Out Starboard Home is one of those phrases for me. One of my fondest memories from my childhood is of sailing at the Arun Yacht Club in Littlehampton. I was paired with a very good sailor called Trevor and together we won countless dinghy sea races, although the local newspaper could never quite get my name right! The banks of the river where we went in and out were very close to the river mouth and beaches, but rather than being nice and sandy were rather oily black mud - not exactly glamorous on any scale! Still, it was great fun, but I suspect I'm wearing rose coloured specs to view my rather hazy memories as I kind of recall chattering teeth as well as frozen fingers and feet in the cold weather, not to mention the rather hefty crack on the head I received from the boom as I didn't have a clue what "Jibe'O" meant - a phrase once hit with, never forgotten! Oh, and I never did manage to remember which was port and which was starboard so I would probably have roasted on an upmarket cruise ;-)

I am now far from the grubby nailed teenager who loved boats and horses (still love horses but always regret helping my son out with his when I see the state of my hands afterwards!) - my nails are long and filed even if I forgo the nail polish because it marks paper and card. The company I am very pleased to introduce you to this week are as far from the less glam side of sailing and cruising as you can get!

The rhinestone, paste and pearls used in thesepieces have an amazing lustre, sparkle and luxurious feel. Weoffer a bespoke service and enjoy making to order, perhaps using an articlewith family sentimental value.

Weare constantly searching for special items we feel will make a beautiful andunique headband or comb. We often incorporate raw silk, brocade, satin, laceand feathers in our designs. We love all things vintage! We gain our inspirationfrom the pieces we find and from studying historical hair accessories,jewellery and fashion. Wehave family connections in France, Germany and Austria and like nothing morethan searching in markets and shops for that extra special jewellery item whenwe are visiting.

Wewere inspired to launch Port Out Starboard Home (P-O-S-H) after Georgie’swedding. We had an idea of the special hair accessories we wanted for thatoccasion, but found that the choice was very limited. Georgie decided to design and make her ownheadband from items in granny’s jewellery box.

Theheadband was a huge success and the business idea was born! We started in avery small way as we both had full time jobs, but when Jill took earlyretirement in July 2011, it seemed an ideal opportunity to launch our business.P-O-S-H has blossomed from there and we have been busy making special items forweddings, balls, proms and other occasions since our official launch inSeptember 2011.

Life has been very hectic since Septemberand we love every minute! We have met some amazing people and have had someinteresting commissions. Our favourite moments have been, designing a bespoke headbandfor a film premiere, a wedding in Las Vegas and experiencing the thrill whenone of our headbands was used in a TV show which will be aired in the spring(details top secret at the moment!). We are currently planning our spring/summercollection when we will be expanding our fabric head dress range, using 1940sand 1950s as inspiration for our designs.

Peopleoften ask how we got our name! We thought long and hard about our name andwanted something unique to convey times gone by when well-to-do people woulddress beautifully in hats and gloves and spend their time cruising on luxuryliners and visiting ports of the world! We believe our unique and glamorousaccessories are perfectly suited to this wonderful lifestyle and era.

P-O-S-H(Port Out Starboard Home) was coined in the days before air-conditioning. On theoutward voyage to India, thecabins on the Port side got the early morning sun and had the rest of the dayto cool off. Conversely, the Starboard cabins were intensely hot in theafternoon and were like ovens at bed time. On the homeward journey the situationwas reversed and it was the unfortunate passengers on the Port side whoroasted. VIPs travelling were givenpreference of the cooler side of the ship in each direction and were givencabins which were Port-Out-Starboard-Home. Their tickets and baggage weremarked POSH! We felt this name conveyed the First Class VIP image we would liketo portray with our collections!

In November, Chez Bec pulled together a team of wedding industry professionals for a fabulous collaborative shoot at Gosfield Hall to showcase their latest collection.

Photographer: Claudine Hartzel has been working with Chez Bec on various shoots for the last couple of years and with a great knowledge of the venue, Claudine was the most perfect photographer for the job. Claudine is a wedding photographer with a fine art background and over 20 years' experience.

Claudine is always influenced by the light when she works and for this shoot we were blessed was a crisp bright November day, so Claudine took the opportunity to shoot outside as much as possible. This helped create a wonderful vintage look which fitted perfectly with the Chez Bec Jewellery and beautiful IsabellaGrace dresses. The back-lit images really do give you a dream-like feel, but Claudine also decided to shoot with the light face on as this allows you to build a more dramatic effect.

Venue: We wanted to do a very feminine, vintage shoot and we needed a venue to reflect this. Having worked at the stunning Gosfield Hall together in the past on shoots, this seemed the most natural choice. And what a venue Gosfield Hall is. Winner of Wedding Ideas Magazine ‘Best Wedding Venue’ 2011, Gosfield Hall is a stunning Georgian manor house offering exclusive-use weddings. Model: The utterly stunning professional model and actress, AliceChristian, has been the face of Chez Bec since the year dot and there is no one else who can model the brand as well as she can. We just had to have Alice!

Hair: When it came to hair for the shoot, we were lucky enough to have the super duper Jo Irving at Lovehair on board. Since Lovehair was established in 2003 by Jo, they have worked with over 1,000 brides. Lovehair’s stylists are some of the best in the business. Working as full time freelance stylists means they spend their weeks styling celebrities, models and lovely brides for photo shoots, television, film and music videos. Dresses: With my very own bridal boutique in Tunbridge Wells, IsabellaGrace, it was only natural to take a selection of our stunning Paloma Blanca dresses along for the shoot. It would have been rude not to.

The Shoot: The day was fantastic from start to finish. The day and night before has been torrential rain but on the morning of the shoot I awoke to the clearest of blue skies. We took full advantage of the fabulously low autumnal sunshine and natural daylight which flooded the rooms at Gosfield Hall so beautifully. Everyone in the team worked incredibly hard and, the results speak volumes for themselves. I am absolutely over the moon. Claudine is not only a great photographer but she has also become a very good friend of mine. So much so that she now photographs all family occasions for us, from family weddings to christenings and special birthday shoots.

The wonderful and highly-talented Adrian from The Dreamcatchers came along to film us all in action on the day of the shoot. With our team much preferring to be behind the camera than in front of it, we were all a little nervous, but the results are great, even if we do say so ourselves. And luckily for you, there's not too much of me on the film!

Happy New Year to everyone! I hope it's been a lovely festive season for you all and that it's been everything you wanted it to be.

Last year I joined a blog hop/linky/meme started by the inspirational Kate for mums everywhere trying to get their groove back or continue grooving! I am the first to admit that although I am a big fan of her blog and others that I'm not very good at contributing regularly as a #groovingmum, I do try to read as many posts as I can and I comment occasionally. We all have ups and downs in life and it is great to have a support network to help you through and who you can help when you are able to.

Each week Kate poses questions/challenges which even if you don't actively reply to them can get you thinking and perhaps acting upon. These are today's, my answers are in blue:

1. Did you over-indulge over the festive season? What can you doto prepare for the life-changing journey ahead in terms of improving yourhealth?

Not particularly, with the exception of Christmas pudding and homemade brandy butter. I haven't been drinking so much wine in the evenings recently so when I do have a glass or two it affects me rather more than it used to! I went to a Christmas Eve party, gave a lift to friends and missed out on the free flowing champagne all evening - didn't miss feeling less than 100% the following day however!

Regarding the pud & brandy butter, I refuse to feel guilty for either as I only have them once a year. My sister-in-law said to me "blimey, the brandy butter packs a punch!" - this was because when I thought it was good enough my eldest son tested it and declared that it needed more brandy, have to say he was right ;-)

2. What do you need to change your mind about? Have you writtenyourself off in some way? How can you shift negative thinking patterns?

Having had a last minute rush order of wedding invitations to do in the week before Christmas as well as trying to get the house straight and clean I was very glad to switch my computer off and have a break from work. Mr LG came home from working in Malta on the 23rd and was absolutely exhausted and run down as he works 12 hour days there. I think he spent the first 24 hours home sleeping, struggled through Christmas day and then we both went down with colds so spent last week either feeling grotty and/or recovering! Since Christmas I have to say that I've been feeling rather disconnected and have found this rather worrying as I love what I do.

However, yesterday and today Mr LG has very kindly tidied up my website for me and sorted out a couple of glitches with the analytics and I've felt the cogs of my brain and enthusiasm click and grind (albeit a trifle rustily!) and start turning again.

I find it difficult to get going at the beginning of each year. New Years resolutions for cutting down on food/drink are useless until January 4th - my birthday is today so I refuse to be on a diet or the wagon till the 4th! In fact I can't say that I'm a big fan of New Years Resolutions as I think changes should be made when you want to make them and for the right reasons, not just because it's the first day of a new year. Make changes because they benefit you and your life whenever you need to make them and you're far more likely to succeed than if you make loads of changes for the sake of it just because you think you ought to.

One of the changes I vowed to make was to walk more often. I have 3 dogs who all love romping around the fields on the farm, but with work commitments it's not always easy to fit it in. We have a garden with a large wooded bank which contains a rabbit warren so they don't exactly miss out if I don't make it for a walk, but I always feel much better for doing it both for myself and for them. And every time I get out there, even if it's only for 15 minutes, I always think of the #grooving mums!

3. This week, Christians celebrate the Epiphany. Here is onedictionary definition for the word epiphany "a sudden, intuitive perceptionof or insight into the reality or essential meaning of something, usuallyinitiated by some simple, homely, or commonplace occurrence orexperience." What does this mean to you?

In November I went to Malta to visit Mr LG for a few days. I was feeling bloated and unattractive and my jeans didn't fit well. This was a kind of epiphany for me - I've always struggled with my weight but have never bought larger than a size 16 except at the very end of my first pregnancy! After a lymphatic drainage massage (which was not the lie back and relax kind of massage!) I felt the benefits a few days later. This with the lower wine intake has helped greatly and I intend to continue losing weight now that the jolly season is over!

4. Are you aware of all the blogging networks you can getinvolved with? Is it worth you checking them out and promoting your efforts tosparkle to a wider audience?

I've recently discovered StumbleUpon.com and hope that as I enjoy finding new articles to read through it on the web that others will find my little blog and enjoy it too!

It is the start of a New Year. Whatever "it" is thatyou are thinking about can be done with a little support.

It's almost the end of 2011, where has it gone?! I hope that it's been a good year for everyone? It's certainly been a busy one here at LG HQ and has flown by! So what's new for 2012? Apart from lots of lovely weddings there is of course going to be the London Olympics. This weeks guest blogger is Dinendra Haria, an Asian Wedding Photographer based in London who has a passion for photographing weddings of all cultures. Dinendra specialises in Asian/Indian Weddings covering the Hindu wedding ceremony, Gujarati wedding ceremony, Sikh wedding ceremony and Muslim wedding ceremony and also photographs English weddings. In his blog, Dinendra shares with us some of the stunning photos that were taken during a traditional Hindu wedding and an English Civil Ceremony for a lovely couple.

"Minal and Gavin's wedding was the perfect demonstration of the joining of two cultures - they had a traditional Hindu wedding followed by an English Civil Ceremony, at Manor of Grove, Hertfordshire. The day started dramatically with a few rumbles of thunder and rain, and then it got warmer and the sun shone in all the right places. Minal and Gavin chose beautifully co-ordinated Indian wedding clothes for the Hindu ceremony, which included the 'Jaimala" where they exchanged flower garlands and 'Kanyadaan' the most important ritual where Minal's hand was given to Gavin as his bride.

The families from both sides had a role to play in the ceremonies and Minal's brothers and cousins were on hand to wish the couple happiness as they completed the 'Mangalpheras' or circling of the sacred fire, the 'Havan'.

The couple changed into romantically understated and chic English outfits for the civil ceremony. Minal's bridesmaids also wore stunning dresses throughout the day, and the colour schemes for the outfits and the surrounding decor were altogether quite mesmerising."

Since the Surrey Networking Tweet Up a couple of weeks ago the Wedding Industry Awards Regional Winners have been announced. Having met so many wonderful people at the Tweet Up I looked with interest to see who the regional winners were. On the list, amongst the people I have heard of but not actually had the privilege to meet, I was thrilled to see the name of one person I had met and with a delightful and unusual business! Mr LG has a huge soft spot for VW Campers, having spent months living in one travelling across Australia many years ago - in fact he still has the VW badge from the front of the van tucked away with all the photos from the trip. My parents bought a VW Camper when I was a teenager, a rather fetching two tone orange and cream (well, it was the late 70's!), with a pop top roof where two people could sleep.

Mini-mooners with a sense of adventure!

I was delighted to be invited to write a blog entry for the lovely Kim at Lil Guys. (We met a couple of weeks ago at the weddings in Surrey Tweet Up, exchanging stories about our mischievous puppies!). I wanted to write a blog about something that seems to be a current trend I have identified, and also something very close to my own heart as a lady passionate about the outdoors...

Over the past three years, surveys have reported a decrease in wedding budgets of around £5k. The honeymoon is starting to make way for the new “mini moon”, as couples become increasingly cost-conscious with wedding plans. These “mini moon” breaks can lead to people coming up with inspirational ideas on how to spend a blissful short break with their loved ones, whilst often avoiding the stress of busy airports, long haul flights and not forgetting the passport shenanigans with maiden name changes.

Giving up the traditional two week holiday on a tropical island need not be a sacrifice with some of the ideas I have seen floating around on the UK wedding forums. As a wedding supplier myself, I spend considerable time on these forums, keeping tabs on changes in wedding trends. I wanted to share with you my top UK mini moon ideas, taken from real bride’s recommendations combined with my love for the British countryside and camping with a luxurious twist...

Having lived a large proportion of my life on the Hertfordshire / Essex border, this little find was rather close to my heart- BOUNCERS FARM CAMPSITE. The cute little gypsy caravan traditional bowtop wagons are adorable, and ooze with romantic charm... imagine sitting together in front of the log burner with a glass of red wine, enjoying each other’s company... Set in an orchard, this campsite is a must, if you are getting marries in the first week of May – think of all that blossom! If you are planning a trip later in the year, October would be ideal for the orchard harvests! For those of you with a real sense of adventure, the farm land can be used for horse riding, and there are even carriage trips available. At £50-60 / night, this little gem is a viable option for those on mini moon!

For those of you looking to sleep under canvas, but without the stress of putting up tent poles, or carting all you camping equipment down with you, why not try Glamping Holiday based on the Surrey / Sussex Boarder. Bell tents decked out with everything from bedding to chandeliers guarantee a camping trip that offers something special...not to mention the welcome breakfast pack on your arrival containing eggs, bacon, bread, butter, jam, milk and even marshmallows.

If a holiday isn’t really a proper trip unless you have crossed the sea, then what about The Isle Of Weight? Yes, this octagonal shaped accommodation is up in the branches, with an oak, spiralling staircase, winding round the central tree... I don’t think that I would want to leave, all snug, looking out at the fantastic views. Short breaks are available out of peak season, at around £360 from Friday to Monday. Prime time August for a full week comes in at £605. Just remember to book well in advance for this hidden treasure.

For the magpies out there that are attracted to bright and shiny things, there is no accommodation that sparkles more than an airstream. We love one campsite in East Dorset near the popular New Forest and wonderful sandy beaches, that hires out these vintage Airstream caravans. Happy Days RetroVacations offer Mobile fire pits can be rented from reception so you can enjoy toasting marshmallows with a glass of local cider by the fire as the sun goes down. A fish and chip van visits on a Saturday night in high season and an ice cream van visits frequently too.

Looking for accomodations reflective of history a little further back in time? Shepherd’s Huts were built in the 19^th century to provide living quarters for shepherds who were away from home during the lambing season. Today, many of these huts are being restored to a high specification, to include sofas, double beds, kitchen and shower room. The Rose and Applewood Shepherds Huts in Butley, close to the Suffolk coast, are situated in a lovely garden, deep in the countryside. Guests will enjoy a wonderful experience, with a pre-war atmosphere, while every practical consideration has been taken care of... Friday to Monday short breaks come it at £318 during August, with a full week costing £505.

Last, but certainly not least, how could I miss out an adventure very close to my own heart... the vintage VW Camper. The Wedding Reporter

One of the lovely people I met first at the Taunton Tweet Up in the summer this year and then again at the opening of Isabella Grace Bridal Boutique in Tunbridge Wells was Emma Woodhouse who is The Wedding Reporter. I do like to discover and bring to you diverse ideas and information connected to weddings and Emma certainly offers a service that I'd never heard of before - and to be honest wish I had done before our wedding in 2008!

I have always written down everything important that’s happened to me. I think I have a phobia of forgetting momentous events, and I like taking time to think about what’s happened as I write it down. Reading it back years later I end up being astonished by things that I thought I’d remember forever.

You think that you’ll remember everything about your wedding. It’s one of the biggest days of your life, right? So much blood, sweat and tears goes into the preparation that you can’t actually comprehend not remembering all of that pain for years to come. How could you possibly forget anything about something so momentous?

The answer is: easily. Weddings are an absolute hurricane of chaos, a tour de force of emotion and adrenaline, and a blur of conversations amidst a sea of faces. In the same way that you won’t get enough time to properly talk to all of your guests, you also won’t get the opportunity to savour the sheer brilliance of the day.

I created The Wedding Reporter in order to offer a service to any bride and groom who want an added layer of texture to the memories of their wedding. Essentially, I attend the wedding as a professional guest; jotting everything I see, hear and feel in my trusty notebook. I burst into tears at the entrance of every single bride because I believe in the power of love. No two wedding reports are the same because no two weddings are the same.

After the wedding I write all my notes up into creative non-fiction account of the day. At the end of it, the couple will have a literary legacy of their day. The words become their property, so they can simply print it off and send it out with thank you cards, or I can have it made into a real book for them. My affiliated designer can create a bespoke cover and publish the reports into unique hardback books that sit beautifully alongside your photo album.

I have created The Wedding Reporter out of a passion for both words and love. There is something luxurious about the written word; I like taking time to labour over the exact sentence structure and choice of words used. This thoroughness is the very least that I can do when endeavouring to narrate what many people will consider to be the best day of their entire lives.

Our Guest Blogger this week is Jenny, who was one of my happy clients from March 2010, and wanted to share some of her wedding memories.

Firstly, all great weddings have to start with planning and preparations, luckily, Kim Stewart from LilGuy Stationery was able to put together the most exquisite wedding invites for my guests and an extremely useful PostBox for all of the cards we were given. I can’t recommend using a PostBox highly enough as I know so many Brides that have had drinks spilt on their cards where they were left placed on tables as guests were not too sure where to put them down or who to give them to. Kim was also able to help with lots of advice on Wedding Favours, table decorations and table plans.

The day of our March wedding came and we were rewarded with a beautiful sunny day, which was even warm enough for our first glass of champagne on the garden terrace and to have our gorgeous wedding photos taken outside.

We married and had our Wedding Breakfast at the Moorland Garden Hotel which has a stunning setting just on the edge of Dartmoor where you can watch wild ponies and sheep grazing on the Moor. The staff ensured our Wedding Day was perfect and all our plans for the day went like clockwork – apart from our cat Thomas getting lost the night before our wedding, which is a rather long story but he was eventually found safe and well the next day!

The Chandelier Ballroom at the Moorland Garden Hotel was bright and spacious with large windows overlooking the garden and we were very fortunate to have the last of the afternoon sun pouring in while we were finishing our speeches which was lovely.

Once everyone had enjoyed the Wedding Breakfast and a few glasses of wine, it was onto our Evening entertainment. Hubby and I had our First Dance and then arranged a surprise Line Dance taster for everyone to join in on! My Mum and I are very keen Line Dancers and although it took a bit of persuasion for hubby to let us to do some dancing at our wedding, it was great fun and we have some fantastic memories of all our guests trying to master the steps! Our fantastic Line Dance Instructor, Sophie Turner was our Caller and did very well in trying to keep our guests dancing the correct steps and staying in the lines! We had such great feedback from our guests on how much they loved this and how it made our day very memorable for them. I would recommend any bride to try something a bit different on their day!

Surrey Networking Tweet Up

One of the great things about working for myself at home is being able to use Twitter while I work. I've made some valuable contacts and lovely friends through it and it provides virtual 'office gossip', which is in some ways better than 'real' office gossip as you can literally switch it off if you're too busy or don't feel like getting involved. Twitter is great for picking up on different things such as information and events like networking meetings. Earlier this year I picked up on the Taunton Tweet Up which I made the effort to go to (yes, it's a long old drive from West Sussex to Somerset, but it was worth it as I tied it in with visiting family). It was great to meet some of the people I'd been tweeting with as well as making new contacts within the industry.

I'd been quite apprehensive whilst driving down to Somerset - sometimes it's difficult to walk into a room full of people you've never met before, but I'd committed myself to going so there was no chickening out! The first people I met were the Marry Me In Somerset girls, Abi & Lisa, along with Rachel and Lucinda, two of the Wedding Ideas Magazine 'herd' - all of whom were very friendly and welcoming. Another person I met in Taunton was Pam Wallin who is the driving force behind the Weddings In Surrey Directory. Having tweeted with her many times over the past year or so it was wonderful to finally meet her - like the Marry Me Somerset girls and all the WIM herd she is as lovely and friendly in person as she is on Twitter! I met many more wedding industry people that evening and thoroughly enjoyed myself.

When I saw a tweet a while ago about another Tweet Up, this time a little closer to home, I signed up for it immediately and put the date in my diary! Organised by Pam Wallin and Wedding Ideas Magazine, it was held at Fetcham Park House in Surrey, a beautiful wedding venue near Leatherhead.

The superbly elegant Grade II* Listed Queen Anne building is set in grounds which were originally landscaped by the famous Capability Brown and is believed to be one of only two remaining buildings which combine the work of architect William Talman and the artist Louis Laguerre.

I'd allowed plenty of time to tackle the A24 to Leatherhead as the evening was due to start at 6.30pm and arrived around half an hour early, plenty of time to admire the splendour of the reception rooms before they filled up with other attendees. If it's country house elegance and style you're looking for then this venue definitely fits the bill and the Laguerre murals in the hall and stairway give a dark, richly opulent feel whereas the reception rooms are decorated in light creams and gold with intricate and colourful high ceilings.

In contrast to the previous networking Tweet Up in Taunton I was not feeling at all apprehensive and had been looking forward all day to meeting more people that I had been chatting with on-line and some that I had yet to connect with. The list of attendees was for around 160 and we certainly filled the place up both physically and in noise level!

By the end of the evening, this country girl who is usually found in either slippers around the house and office or wellies outside walking the LGs was feeling decidedly footsore after several hours in gorgeous high heels, but very positive, buoyed up and raring to go! I may not be a wedding planner, but I do have an incredible list of contacts within the industry now and it's always wonderful to be able to recommend a supplier to a bride - weddings and their planning can be an absolute minefield of information and can leave couples and their families feeling that they don't know where to start. So if you're looking for a Wedding Planner, a Florist, a Harpist, a Caterer, a Cake Designer, a Candy Buffet or a Chimney Sweep (yes, really!) if I can't personally recommend one it's likely that I know someone who can.

I's so easy to become insular and isolated when you work at home for yourself, easy too to be in need of a little 'spark' or 'va va voom' and meeting like minded professionals can really help to give you a boost. So many thanks to Pam and WIM for organising such a lovely evening!

A Long Weekend In Malta - Part Two

Unfortunately on Saturday evening when we went out in the car to find somewhere to eat, it was raining, as it had been on and off all afternoon. We ended up in a quaint looking Italian restaurant (we were trying to find a small local establishment serving great food rather than one of the larger chains with a TGI Fridays feel to it). After a disappointingly indifferent dinner we headed back to the hotel rather than the clubs and bright lights of Paceville.

As I mentioned yesterday, our hotel is opposite one of the many churches in Malta. It looks very pretty with it's dome and two bell towers which we can see very clearly from our balcony. This is because we are almost on a level with them. Which means that we can hear them. Very clearly. Whenever they are rung. The smaller church a few blocks away has a much softer sounding bell. We haven't as yet quite worked out what the bells are tolled for. At first we thought that one bell sounding one, two or three times followed by the other bell sounding however many times was telling the time, but this doesn't seem to be the case after all. We may never know! All we do know is that sleeping with the balcony doors open is a no-no if you want to get any sleep!

The breakfast here is wonderful - a huge selection of cheeses, fruit, yoghurt, pastries and cooked breakfast ingredients to choose from, fruit juices and water. A word of warning to any coffee lovers however - the coffee here is dire! You can stoke up on as much breakfast as you like and it'll keep you going virtually all day. After a lazy start to the day we headed out in the car to explore a bit more of the island. Marsaxlokk in the south east of the island is meant to be still a slice of traditional Maltese life, however the Sunday market selling a mixture of local produce and tourist tat could have been in any tourist area in the world. We stopped for a quick cold drink and then left.

On Saturday we had seen a sign for The Blue Grotto whilst driving around the Rabat area where Mdina is situated. Just the one sign! So on our way to visit the prehistoric temples in the south west of the island we decided to try again to find the Blue Grotto.

We did find the Blue Grotto this time, but unfortunately it was very windy and therefore the sea was too choppy to make the half hour boat trip to the caves seem very attractive, so we passed on that one and made our way to the prehistoric temple site. Unlike Stonehenge which is open to the elements, the temples have been enclosed under a dome to protect them from the elements. At 9 Euros each to view the temples (plus visitor centre) we felt this was rather pricey compared to the value at the cathedral so gave this a miss also.

A late lunch at one of the waterfront restaurants in Vittoriosa, one of The Three Cities opposite Valletta, and indulging in a spot of people watching, passed a couple of hours.

The Hypogeum in Paola is an underground necropolis discovered during building work in 1902 and is thought to date back as far as 3600BC. If Mr LGs contract here continues and I get to come here to visit again this is definitely something I would like to visit. Tickets have to be booked at least 2 weeks in advance as visitor numbers are restricted but this can be done on-line before you get here - tours last around 50 minutes and it is not suitable for children under 6.

Mr LG is back at work today (boo!) but I've enjoyed a leisurely lie-in, a stroll down to the waterfront, reading my Kindle in the sunshine on the balcony, a bit of blogging and resting my feet! This evening we're going out with work colleages of Mr LG which will be fun but will no doubt be an early evening as they are all working such long hours, added to which the others went home to the UK for the weekend and arrived back at the hotel at around 1.30am so are likely to be feeling a little jaded!

Tomorrow I have another leisurely day, as well as doing a bit of work on my laptop I might also investigate the spa facilities here. Wednesday morning Mr LG and I catch the flight back to LGW and back to what passes for 'normality' at our house!

The long weekend has done both of us good, without the pressures of general every day life at home. It's been lovely to be shown around Malta by Mr LG, to spend time on our own and just be a couple, and I think (hope!) he's enjoyed some time alone with me and showing me around. He warned me that this area is very brown and built up and he wasn't wrong. Everything here is built of local limestone, and if there are planning laws they are not particularly evident, there's a mixture of old and new, and much restoration work in progress. It rained before I got here so where over the last few months everything has been brown and dry suddenly overnight there is a bit of grass here and there.

Driving here is not for the faint hearted. Don't be fooled by the fact that they drive on the same side as us and the signs and rules are very similar! It's every man for himself, zebra crossings you should treat very warily and make sure ALL traffic has stopped for you, give way signs don't seem to mean much at all, and if you commit the cardinal sin of actually giving way at a junction you will be hooted at from behind even if there's not a millimetre of space to jump into! Oh, and Christmas decorations are going up left right and centre - look rather incongruous in the 21 degree sunshine but hey ho!

So on Wednesday I go home and back to being a mum as well as a wife, but feeling like I've had a bit of 'us' time with Mr LG and a bit of 'me' time while he's working - all very important in either getting your groove back or maintaining it!

A Long Weekend In Malta - Part One

Mr LG is currently working in Malta as a consultant to their national airline, he and the other consultants are very good at what they do and inch by inch they are progressing. Change is not something welcomed with open arms and it can be very frustrating for those that can see that change is the only way forward - "The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and over again expecting a different result." Whoever said that is right (Einstein or Franklin, take your pick!), but the culture here really doesn't like change. This makes the long 10 hour work days for Mr LG really rather stressful and tiring. He does come home some weekends, although not all weekends, and rather than being totally relaxing and stress free they can be stressful too. I am good at coping on my own but when Mr LG gets home things happen such as the terrierist LGs escaping and pulling all nighters which are stressful, and the ordinary everyday stuff such as laundry doesn't magically do itself so I can't just forget that the school uniform needs to be washed!

Being at home I don't really get to forget that I'm a mother first and foremost. My eldest is now 18 and the youngest 15. The eldest is great at doing practical things such as putting up new fencing to try to contain the LGs, the youngest gets himself up in the morning and gets ready for school. But I'm still their mother and get to do the laundry and most of the cooking and clearing up! So I suggested that it might be an idea for me to pop down to Malta for a couple of days rather than Mr LG coming home, and I have to say that it's been wonderful. Although you never completely forget being a mother, it's rather nice for a change to just be a wife.

Mr LG normally stays in the Victoria Hotel, Sliema, which looks fabulous as you walk in, very opulent and regal, however, he arranged for us to be upgraded to the parent hotel, The Palace, which is connected via a corridor, and the differences are apparent immediately e.g. the lift in the Palace wizzes you silently and smoothly to your destination floor while the lift in the Victoria trundles, rattles and jolts at around a quarter of the speed. I think possibly because Mr LG is a regular here his upgrade request was upgraded again and we have one of the Designer Suites on the 7th floor with an enormous bed you literally sink into, a huge flatscreen TV in front of a comfy Chesterfield and a luxurious bathroom complete with a deep tub you can wallow in for hours with your Kindle, a separate shower and fluffy bath robes, not to mention the huge balcony with sun loungers, table and chairs accessed via two sets of sliding doors.

Friday evening after I arrived we went out to the local supermarket and bought some food and sat on the balcony to eat it. It gets dark pretty early here, being close to the equator, so it was rather romantic sitting in the warm November evening with the lights on the yachts and all over the towns twinkling away, and the church just across the street looked so beautiful with the dome and bell towers all lit up. Then even though the clouds looked fairly wispy and non-threatening it started to rain, so we shoved the table and chairs under the overhang of the balcony above and continued dinner in what turned out to be a fairly hefty thunderstorm!

Saturday morning we went into Valletta by bendy-bus (yep, Malta has got Boris's cast offs!) which was ......an experience. I don't suffer with travel sickness but it was a close call on a bendy-bus bouncing alarmingly over rough and potholed roads! Don't come to Malta expecting to pick up bargains, many of the shops are British (M&S, Next, etc.,) and cost more than at home. Mr LG did take me to a wonderful place for coffee, Caffe Cordina, which is definitely worth a visit as the interior is absolutely stunning and has a rich history. You can while away some time sipping your coffee and indulging in some of the luscious looking cakes whilst the locals pop in for a swift breakfast taken at the bar.

Another must see in Valletta is St. John's Co-Cathedral whether you are a practising Catholic or a staunch agnostic - remember to take something to cover your shoulders as you won't be allowed in if not suitably dressed. The rather austere outside of the building hides an awesome baroque interior - the word awesome is used far too readily and has lost much of it's meaning these days, but the interior of this building does leave you feeling truly awestruck.

Love it or hate it, the intracate carvings, paintings and inlaid marble floors have to be seen to be believed and the very reasonable entrace fee of 6 Euros per adult gets you access to the cathedral to wander at your leisure (outside service times) with a handheld audio guide, viewing works of art such as Caravaggio's Beheading of St. John The Baptist (macabre subject matter but the size of the canvas is immense and makes you wonder how on earth they removed and transported it for restoration!) and Saint Jerome Writing, as well as a collection of sacred vestments and Flemish Tapestries.

On Saturday afternoon we drove to the ancient walled city of Mdina which is also worth a visit to wander around the medieval and baroque architecture and to gaze at the views from the walls across the island. You can take a horse and carriage ride around the city, but these are very touristy (i.e. overpriced!) and best avoided so that you can explore to your hearts content the narrow alleys.

Designing and Creating Cakes By Janet Mohapi-Banks

Our Guest Blogger this week is Janet Mohapi-Banks who designs and creates the most exquisite cakes to suit every taste and wedding theme.

Designing and creating cakes is the most enjoyable part of my job. Wedding cake design can take inspiration from the clients stationery, dress, flowers or colour scheme. This ensures that the wedding cake is the centrepiece of the day that ties everything together.

The design process starts with a private consultation that typically lasts a couple of hours and is usually held at the clients home or wedding venue. The luxury service I offer means that I usually get to know my Brides and Grooms really quite well and I feel that this is an important part in designing a cake perfect for them. Although my Brides and Grooms get a portfolio of previous cakes to look at, each design is unique and based on their tastes and their unique wedding day.

Sketches are drawn with the clients present that enables them to visualise their cake and the ability to let know the features they like and the aspects that they would like to change. The sketch is then changed accordingly until the client is happy with every part of their wedding cake design.

Once the design is finalised and the order confirmed, I get to work creating the sugar features that will be present on it. Whether it’s sugar flowers or piping templates, all aspects of the cake including the cakes themselves are handmade to order.

My signature cake Rose contains literally hundreds of hand-pulled sugar roses. Each sugar rose takes between about 10 minutes to about an hour to create depending upon size so it is therefore necessary to start making sugar flowers as early as possible if many of them are featured on the cake.

Extensive hand-piping usually requires planning and templates are created to ensure that the pattern is evenly spaced. Obviously the hand-piping can’t be done until the cake is baked and covered in almond paste and icing. This means that although the planning can be done in advance the actual piping has to be done at the last minute.

Given that all Janet Mohapi-Banks cakes are baked as close to the delivery date as possible to ensure freshness, except the rich fruit cake that takes three months to mature, extensive hand piping sometimes requires working through the night.

Whatever the design, a Janet Mohapi-Banks cake is guaranteed to be aesthetically exquisite and tastes as good as it looks.

Jewellery Workshop

Last week I joined in a linky/blog hop from Kate on Thin Ice on mums getting their groove back, which is a wonderful way to share stories, tips and general encouragement. I am not a young mum by any stretch of the imagination as my boys are now 18 and 15 but they live at home much of the time and sometimes even now the pressures of running a home and family at the same time as running my own business can seem daunting. I'm no longer chasing toddlers around and changing nappies but chasing up teenagers to help me around the house, keep their rooms clean and tidy, and in the case of the youngest to do his homework. Oh, and struggling to keep 2 out of 3 of the LGs from escaping the garden and disappearing for up to 24 hours at a time! Just yesterday I happened to pop my head out of the back door to see Bingo squeeze through a hole in the fence with Betsie egging him on and impatiently waiting her turn to join him! At my yell she came slinking back to the house looking incredibly guilty but Bingo with one bound was free and bounced happily across the fields away from the house. Dashing out to the front of the house I jumped into my car and belted across the fields from the other direction to cut him off before he managed to get too far - as he sees the 4x4 as the ultimate pack leader this is far more effective than running after him & he happily followed me home so got a bit of exercise whilst being retrieved (which is more than can be said for me!).

Last week I mentioned that I'd signed up for a jewellery making course and Tuesday this week was my first class. It's not always easy to meet new people so I was a little apprehensive as I drove there, but I needn't have been. I'm most definitely the novice and the other ladies have been going for some while but they made me feel very welcome and I never once felt I was asking a stupid question. I came home feeling very positive and excited by a new challenge - and I fear it will be challenging, possibly more for Katherine, our teacher, than me, as I have yet to get the hang of using the saw to cut copper sheet into workable pieces without breaking the incredibly fine blades! She assured me that she doesn't charge for blades used, although I think she may be rethinking that policy by next Tuesday! I came home armed with a couple of trade catalogues and a little bit more knowledge than before and have just received a parcel of bits and pieces (including my own saw and blades).

So this week I have started a new course, tidied most of the house, sorted out all the laundry and prevented an escape party - not bad going. Just one small blip - Mr LG comes home from Malta for the weekend today and I turned up 12 hours early to collect him from the airport, still, looking on the bright side, I did the weekend shopping on the way to Gatwick so at least that's out of the way!

If anyone has any suggestions for jewellery projects please feel free to let me know - I have one in mind for my mother's birthday in December but other than that I'm open to suggestion.

Weddings are not just about the bride - sorry ladies but it's true! It's your man's day too, and your dad's, even if their speeches do refer to you, the whole point of the day is the marriage of your lives together to become a full partnership rather than a take over! Much blood, sweat and tears go into many wedding speeches and often the poor chaps have to sit through a full wedding breakfast knowing that they have to stand up and give a speech afterwards, which can't be great on the nerves. So, today's guest blogger gives some advice on speaking in public to an audience, which of course applies to ladies as well as to any best man or father of the bride!

A TALE OF A TERRIFIED BEST MAN

As I stepped up to the microphone to talk about my friend I had 20 minutes to inform, entertain and acknowledge a crowd who were it was, well in the main, strangers to me. I was petrified – 20 mins how the heck am I going to fill all that time? When I accepted Peter's invite to be his best man, I really had no idea what I was letting myself in for. Apart from all the stag night and the ring, it was my responsibility to look after the groom and that included the stag night. It’s best if we leave that tale for another day!

Once I was into my stride most of the things I had to deal with happened fairly easily. That’s not to say there were no issues, but most of the tasks seemed to follow a fairly natural path. Until the realisation hit me, that in four weeks I had to give a best man’s speech! Now standing there bigging up and embarrassing my friend was a juicy thought. But the closer I got, the more I realised a lot of what I had written was not going to be appropriate. My laddish style was not going to hit the spot, not to mention the jokes I had planned!

During the conversations with Peter and his parents, and the telephone call to the brides parents told me as much. Peter and I went back many years and I could embarrass him royally. But I was told in no uncertain terms, I was to keep it clean. So everything I had decided to use was now useless. It was then I started to get very worried about speaking to a bunch of people I hardly knew.

It was then I experienced the first emotions that were to scare the living what’s’ it’s out of me.

As I later found out, speaking in public is our number one fear. Well in Western societies it is.

Earlier I mentioned the feelings I was starting to experience. And you can feel the fear of speaking, because it’s down to a bunch of chemicals that are let loose on us. These are the same chemicals produced by our brain that we get, when, well you are overtaking a lorry on the Motor way and you get a blow out at 70 mph, in rush hour. Your brain is hard wired to react that way.

The closer it got to the big day the more nervous I felt. It got so bad I went to a hypnotherapist in search of help. On the evening before the wedding I took Peter down to the pub at 9:30 for a last pint or two. After all I was under strict orders to keep him sober. Over a beer I mentioned I was petrified and suggested he might get a replacement! Well what happened was adequate and the end the day went well, and I managed not to offend anyone, And I believe I mentioned all the people who had made the day go well.

The one thing the experience showed me was a singular deficiency that deterred me from speaking to groups. I decided to do something about it and conquer this fear of speaking in public. Five years later I was again a best man and this time I was ready, primed and confident. I had taken a speaking class which had put me on the right road. But what it did was engender a life long love of speaking in public. It is now something I love. So much so a year ago I gave up my job and started teaching people how to speak for a living.

Being able to speak in public should not put anyone off, in my opinion it should be taught in schools, well it is in

America

. Now you may realise why Americans often seem so at ease when speaking to groups. If there is one tip above all other it is ‘Be yourself’. Once you start trying to be someone else you just pile on the pressure and believe me your nerves will win the day!

The main purpose of this blog is to bring you all useful, helpful and relevant information on anything wedding related, and the occasional bit of frivolity or personal bits. Weddings, civil ceremonies and other celebrations take a good deal of planning, time and money, so it's very important that you have exactly the day you want so that you can look back on the whole experience with pleasure and happiness rather than wishing it could have been different.

You may follow a religion and be happy to get married in your regular place of worship, or you may be looking for something a bit different. Some register offices are lovely I'm sure but some are probably rather business like and impersonal and may have a kind of production line feel to them. You might want something a bit more than just a quick register office ceremony but not a full blown religious service, today Rev. Brendan Johnson, an Interfaith Minister, offers some words of help and advice.

Photos, check. Flowers, check. Ceremony…..?

Did you know that you can have a bespoke ceremony, designed to reflect your beliefs, without having to go through the dogma of a service you may not believe in, or the sterility of the Civil wording? I’m a Minister with the One SpiritInterfaith Foundation and there are nearly 500 of us, and there are lots more Independent Celebrants in the UK. Whilst (at the moment) it is only the Official registrar who can ‘legally’ marry someone, many more couples are finding that they can do the ‘legal bit’ separately, and are opting for a more personalised service (literally!) www.interfaithfoundation.org/unique-wedding-ceremony answers some of the question you might have.

An independent Celebrant is able to work with couples to really work out what they want to say to one another and isn’t limited by one creed or dogma, if you want Hindu Scriptures, Islamic poetry and Bon Jovi, why not? It’s YOUR day! If you want to include any kind of element that you’ve seen elsewhere, you can. Our job is to deliver what you want from a ceremony, so please do consider one of the many Independent Celebrants available. Most couples put a lot of thought into the details of the ceremony, i.e. cakes, flowers, dresses, cars, and so on, but don’t really realise that they can do so much more than just writing a few words of their own to be included in a load of promises to a God they don’t necessarily believe in.

Getting Your Groove Back

As regular readers will know, I am a big fan of Twitter. I have been rather snowed under with work recently so have been very quiet there lately but yesterday and today I have my Tweetdeck open so can occasionally catch the odd thread of an interesting conversation or topic whilst tying gorgeous red ribbon on some Orders of Service for Kate and David's wedding this coming Saturday. I have been sent a link by a friend on Twitter to a new blog hop/linky (which is completely new to me) concerned with helping mums to have a personal revival and getting their groove back.

I'm extremely lucky to be able to do what I love and get paid for it - for me it's not about how much money I can earn, it's more about helping others to have beautiful stationery and enabling me to have the lifestyle I want, which is to work from home, being a wife and mother and looking after my mad, sometimes naughty but always loveable LilGuys. Sometimes even my enthusiasm needs a little boost, I need to find my mojo, to get my creative juices flowing again. This can come in various ways, sometimes a walk over the fields with the LGs on a sunny day is enough to boost spirits (a walk on a sunny day and returning home with ALL the LGs in one go sends the spirits soaring into orbit!), sometimes it takes a bit more.

In her blog Kate asks two questions this week:

1. What song would it be best to play a lot while attempting to get your groove back?

A. For me it's not so much one song in particular, but to make sure the radio's on, LOUD, and to sing along to everything and to dance in a stupid way for the LGs and make myself laugh!

2. What can you do to make your body feel better this week?

A. Even a very short walk of 10-15 minutes will get your blood pumping and even if you only manage to do it once this week it will be better than not at all.

Last week I signed up for a silver jewellery making course. Over the course of the last couple of years I have noticed that there are very few suppliers of embellishments for making stationery, with the result that we all tend to use the same things, albeit in different ways. I have sourced and imported some different sparkly embellishments myself that are not available through the normal suppliers, but I'd like to be able to go even further and create my own designs. So, the course will hopefully give me new technical skills which I'll be able to use to this end, and in the process I'll be making some birthday and Christmas presents. I was quite surprised at how excited I was and how positive I felt after signing up for this course - perhaps I just prevented my mojo from disappearing for a while, I certainly hadn't realised that my groove was in need of recouping! Whatever, I have had a new spring in my step since then and can't wait to complete my current orders so that I can get on with some more designing - especially as I discovered a local supplier of sparkly beads etc., and indulged myself a tiny bit with some lovely new bits and pieces!

On Saturday we held an End of Summer party for friends at home - aptly named as it would appear! Although it was warm we had at least two downpours which had us abandoning shelter under the gazebo and running for the kitchen, then on Monday we had the mother of all hoolies which had the rain being driven almost horizontally across the fields. So, on Tuesday I very happily settled down in jeans and a very thick jumper to make snowflake themed Christmas cards (which are available through my boutique on Gift Wrapped and Gorgeous). Bizarrely today I'm back in a sundress and the sun has already burnt off the mist so it's going to be a glorious September day!

I watch quite a lot of wedding TV (all in the name of research you understand!) and The First Dance seems to attract quite a lot of attention. My parents used to attend regular dinner dances at a time when it was in vogue, and they no doubt had dancing lessons at school which meant that even if they weren't Fred & Ginger they could certainly get by without treading on too many toes! "A year ago on Saturday we had amazing weather, unlike this year, so it was really great that Hayley and Craig chose that day to get married. One of the great things about Suffolk is that it's awash with fantastic wedding venues and Haughley Park Barns is one amazing place. Unlike a lot of barn wedding venues, Haughley isn't just a barn in a field with some pretty lights, but a whole beautifully laid out and landscaped country park, complete with stunning Tudor style hall.

Up at Haughley there is a lovely farmhouse where Hayley spent the morning getting ready along with her mum, dad, bridesmaids and lovable pooch 'Teddy'. It's always great to spend time with the bride while she is getting ready as there are so many opportunities for story telling moments which make wonderful photographs and really help set the scene in the album. While Hayley was getting, Craig had arrived with his best man and I spent some time with him before Hayley made her grand entrance. It was a simple ceremony and the clouds which had been threatening to rain on us decided to move on and let the sun shine down as the happy bride and groom were presented to their friends and family for the first time.

Haughley also has some fantastic glass sculptures dotted around the grounds and really, you just can't pass up a photo opportunity like that can you?

One of the things I love about taking bridal photographs is creating something that the bride and groom can look back on in years to come. Something Hayley and Craig certainly have done as to mark their anniversary Hayley created a Youtube video of photographs from their wedding."

So much time, effort and money goes into planning a wedding and no one wants to have a disaster on the day, our guest blogger this week, Claire aka The Wedding Day PA share some words of wisdom on how to avoid this!

How To Avoid A Wedding Day Disaster

Upon telling people I meet that I am a wedding planner - most people ask what do you do when there is a wedding day disaster and thankfully (touching a bit of wood) I haven't yet encountered a major wedding day disaster but this isn't due to the fact I am lucky or God was looking down on me that day - for the most part the reason why the weddings I co-ordinate, and indeed the success behind any big celebration or event, is.....it's all in the planning. Sounds simple but what amazes me most about weddings and brides/grooms planning a wedding is nine out of ten couples spend so much time, energy and money ensuring they have planned their perfect wedding that most forget that the actual day itself needs planning and a "go-to" person for any last minute questions or surprises this as you will find out this doesn't need to be a wedding day co-ordinator. If you have a couple of capable friends dividing some simple wedding day tasks and checks can ensure the difference between a wedding day disaster and your perfect day....

The main tip I would give to brides is to have all your paperwork and supplier information sorted in a neat and tidy wedding file. This file should contain all the suppliers contact details, what services they are supplying and copies of receipts paid along with any monies due in a sealed envelope. Give this file to a trusted bridesmaid/maid of honour or sibling who can have the file stored in a secure place and refer to it if and when needed.

Secondly, I hate having my photo taken - I avoid it at all costs, if you also dread the photographers camera flash ensure you book a engagement shoot - now for those of you that do hate having your photo taken this may seem like a crazy idea to have more photos taken than required, however having a pre-wedding/engagement photo shoot will make you feel at ease with your photographer and means you can practise some wedding type photo poses. On your wedding day ask your photographer's assistant to do a quick walk around the popular photo opportunities at your venue to make sure there are no cigarette ends or big muddy puddles on the gravel etc.

Most brides spend hours choosing the right centrepieces and table decorations to turn their wedding reception into their perfect dream, ask your venue co-ordinator if you can set one table up prior to the wedding exactly how you want it to look on the day itself and take a photo, hand that to whoever is setting up your decorations - nothing is more clear for them than a photograph to work from.

Have an emergency wedding day kit close to hand - I have for example over 100 items in The Wedding Day PA's emergency kit which includes a spare bouquet and wedding cake! Having a few essentials such as some loose powder, lip gloss and a small sewing kit can keep you looking a bridal beauty all day long!

When booking your DJ/band who are to play your chosen track for your first dance ensure they have the CD/can play the track chosen - nothing can turn a perfect wedding day into a wedding day disaster than not being able to dance your first dance to a track you don't know and haven't chosen. Here at The Wedding Day PA I carry a Ipod with powerful speakers and make sure the first dance of the chosen couple is downloaded and ready should the worse happen!

Tantrums and Tiaras

As you all know I have a guest blogger each Wednesday and as and when I can I post extra blogs. Normally our guest blog posts are about the company and product(s) they offer, which I hope are useful to you either for inspiration for your big event or as just the contact you were needing and hadn't quite found. Our guest blogger today, Kelly from Tantrums and Tiaras, gives an insight into the emotional side of working in the wedding industry which I think will help and inspire others in the business but will also be of value to anyone in any business and from any walk of life.

When asked to write a blog post it’s always hard to know what to say. Do you tell the readers about yourself and why you do what you do and how marvellous you are or do you tell everyone about your numerous award nominations this year or your products and how fab and sparkly they are? I could do either however this time around I thought I’d blog in more general terms about some of the highs and lows of the business.

I still work full time whilst running Tantrums and Tiaras and I make every single piece myself by hand. My day job inspires but challenges me on a regular basis. The stakes are high and the games played even higher, there are politics, things to say, things not to say and it’s not hard to imagine how this all fits into the big rat race that is life. That said, on a good day, and there are plenty of them – it is the best job in the world. It is an organisation that focuses very heavily on people and in fact without them there would be no job to do at all. So, why tell you all of this? Well the wedding industry is pretty much the same. It’s an amazing industry to work in but it’s not without its downfalls. I’m particularly lucky as I get to make some pretty lovely pieces and of course, I’m never stuck for something to accessorise an outfit and if I am, I can whip myself something up!

But there is another side and something that those of us that have been around for a while will know and understand. We of course will kind of forget about whilst things are well and busy. The problem is that it is during this time that it can manifest itself and you have no control. I’m one of those people that strive for quality and works really hard to make sure I deliver that. I also offer excellent customer service and my 10 returns in 4 years in fact is testament to that. So what is it that pops up and causes unrest in a normally sparkly world? It’s hard to say exactly and some will be convinced that it’s the high levels of competition or because of the mutterings of others elsewhere and there’s a good chance that this is somewhat true however I think it’s more than that.

If you are in the bridal industry because you love the business and you care about what you do, it makes every knock personal however slight. There are some of course that will never encounter this problem as the end game for them is only ever about making money and having a successful business and as a result are not sighted on how some can be affected. This perceived lack of passion and obvious strive for similar goals is what in my view causes the internal conflict. That said, anyone who says that they’re not in the business to make money would be fibbing. It’s what we all ultimately want but like I’ve already alluded to, it’s not what drives the passion inside. This is why so many of the creative types in the industry can sometimes feel flat and disheartened and it’s a hard storm to weather. Of course, not all people make it.

I guess the point of this blog post is to say if you sometimes feel this way, don’t panic! You’re normal and it’s probably because you genuinely care about what you do. If you do not have knocks in your confidence you do not have the opportunity to use this energy to improve and come back bigger and stronger than ever. My advice on how to deal with this is to focus only on what you do. Do not look at what others do or how well others are doing and certainly do not read more into what people are or are not saying. And if that sounds too much just remember to keep calm and sparkle!

Life and the people we come into contact with will| throw us the occasional curveball and sometimes we all have 'blue' or 'down' days that can sap our energy or knock our confidence. It is largely how we deal with these events that help to shape us and help us to understand ourselves and others. Being successful in life doesn't always mean earning the most money. To me it is being able to live the life I want and being able to help others.

When I took voluntary redundancy last September there was a small part of me inside which felt a little miffed that I was no longer required, even though it was my choice. This is I think a fairly normal and typical reaction as we all want to feel that we're indispensable! I had already decided that rather than fret and worry that I was going to use this opportunity to concentrate full time on my business and really make a go of it. I have been fortunate enough to have come into contact with some lovely people who have given advice and words of encouragement that have helped enormously. There is a huge amount of competition out there but I think that this is a healthy thing, it helps to keep you on your toes and sometimes you may get or give referrals.

Rachel is an extremely talented and creative all round designer who specialises in typography, layouts, logo designs and custom illustrations and is available for commissions. New Arrival & White Gold Images

Having recently spent a few days in the West Country a tweet from a photographer about a wedding in Cornwall caught my eye this morning. I lived in Devon as a small child, had numerous happy family holidays on the Cornish coast and spent a fair few weekends driving around Dartmoor with my Grandfather in his later years, so am reasonably familiar with the area. On Friday I needed to get from Plymouth city centre to Saltash to visit my niece and the newest addition to the family, month old baby Nathan.

Now, I rarely rely on Wanda, the satnav, to take me anywhere as I swear she has a very warped sense of humour - she famously took Mr LG and I from village 1 to village 2 in Italy up and over a mountain rather than round the main roads. Yes there was a 'road', yes it was registered and useable (?!), but although it was a two way road it was only one car wide with a sheer rock face on one side of the car and what must have been a 1 in 2 drop on the other side - I do not have a great head for heights and Mr LG does not have a great tolerance for gibbering wrecks in the passenger seat so this was not a pleasant experience for either of us!

Anyway, last Friday I was a little unsure of how to get to my niece's house as I've only been there once before so I turned Wanda on for guidance. I was pretty sure that I should be taking the A38 in the opposite direction to Exeter and so set off following the signs whilst waiting for Wanda's gps to find me. Was a little surprised when she started to direct me away from the A38 but obeyed her anyway - should have listened to my intuition! When she instructed 'in 300 yards take the ferry' I suddenly realised that I was in a queue, one way, heading towards a stretch of water and a ferry with absolutely no idea how to avoid it. What should have been a 10 minute drive across a bridge over the Tamar to Saltash turned into a 45 minute journey involving the Torpoint ferry, thanks Wanda!

Ages ago the lovely Yvonne shared some valuable advice for those of us who hate having their photo taken. This morning I've been reading her blog and I felt I just had to share with you the beautiful and intimate wedding of Vannavy and Oliver in Cornwall as captured by Yvonne. With a mixture of black and white and colour photos Yvonne has captured perfectly the joy and happiness of the day in a way that Vannavy and Oliver are sure to treasure forever. Since giving up the day job last September to concentrate fully on my business I have become rather addicted to Twitter, as I think it may have been mentioned before! The wedding business is a particularly friendly and happy one to be involved in, and I have built up a solid base of both brides/grooms to be and other suppliers. Twitter is my 'office gossip' as well as being a support network and sometimes a sounding board for new ideas.

Emma Buzec was a bride to be when we connected on Twitter and has since started her own business and I'm very pleased to welcome her to the blog today with her alternative to the traditional flower bouquets and buttonholes.....

Cute as a Button was set up in March 2011. The idea was born from looking for ideas for my own 2012 wedding when I came across button bouquets on the internet and had my heart set on getting one. However, our wedding is being put together on a very small budget and I could not warrant spending so much on a bouquet - so I tried to forget all about it!

After quite a few discussions with friends, family and hubby to be, I decided I would try to make one myself. I tweeted photos of my progress and got some amazing feedback. Through tweeting I was contacted by another bride to be asking how much I would charge to make her a button bouquet - so that's how my first order came about!

I now have a website, Facebook page, and am of course on Twitter! I have had further orders, and one of our bridal bouquets was used in the catwalk show at A Most Curious Wedding Fair in Norwich this year. We had our first ever wedding fair stand at "Truly Vintage" wedding fair, Glemham Hall at the beginning of June.

Many thanks to Emma for sharing the story behind Cute as a Button with us and I wish her much success with her business. I had a beautiful fresh flower bouquet on my wedding day and have tried to preserve it as best I can but inevitably it will never look the same as it did on the day. Perhaps Mr LG and I should hold a renewal ceremony each year so that I can use all the new and exciting ideas that I keep coming across!

Little Bundles Bunting

There are virtually endless different themes and colour schemes for your wedding these days, but it's not always easy to find exactly what you want within your chosen theme/scheme. As a stationer I am happy to and enjoy creating special stationery to your theme or colour scheme and find it hard to understand when businesses won't help or say that they can't help - there's usually a way around most 'problems'! I enjoy a challenge and usually the process of trying to find a way of solving a problem gives you a deeper knowledge of your area of expertise, the best, easiest and most cost effective way of doing something. Even if you don't use all the techniques you research straight away, the chances are you will need the information at some point in the future.

How did Little Bundles Begin?

I’d been looking everywhere for personalised bunting for my daughter’s birthday, back in 2004; all I could find was generic bunting in basic colours from companies who only wanted to sell me what they stocked, no-one was prepared to source fabric and create me a unique design. It was my, then 4 year old, daughter who announced to everyone that her “mummy” was going to make her bunting! I have always had a creative flair, so thought why not!

Do you just make bespoke bunting?

The majority of our business is made to order bunting, but we have just started to offer bunting lengths for hire. This has come after a very successful run of Union Jack bunting for the Royal Wedding. We still want to produce exclusive bunting, so anything to hire will be made as limited editions. Our bunting has been used at all sorts of parties, events and weddings – and weather permitting, can be used outside.

What makes you different from other bunting companies?

The most important thing for us is that our clients get exactly what they want. A lot of the time they come to me with a great idea, but can’t visualise it. It’s my job to then design something, get the fabrics and colours together and either send samples or email a photo of the design, layout and colour scheme.

We want to make every client feel that they are unique, not just another number. We spend a lot of our time discussing what the client wants, then of course time making the bunting. If we don’t have a specific fabric in stock, we will then go out and source it. It is us providing a completely bespoke service to our clients.

Where do you retail your bunting?

Our clients are all over the UK, and through online shops have sold to the USA, we can post our items anywhere! The majority of orders come directly to me, but we have sold via online shops such as ETSY and Ebay.

Favours and gifts are always hot topics when planning a wedding, budgets and ideas vary widely. Today we welcome Zoe from Zebedeez Jewellery who makes a plethora of ranges from tiaras to favours for your wedding!

There are so many different things now available for wedding favours….. Anything goes, classic, quirky, sweet and fun it is completely your choice. I create ready produced items, or bespoke items for the bride and when doing a consultation always get an idea of budget so that we can stick within it, or as near to… as much as possible.

Well we've had an extremely dry Spring this year with some glorious sunshine then June arrived, more damp squib than Flaming June! This winter was long and hard with several bouts of snow - which I have to say I for one am not complaining about as I think it's good to have differences in the seasons. Could have done without the brakes on my 4x4 freezing solid so we were effectively snowed in here at Lil'Guy HQ but that's another story! Now though we're looking forward to summer - long sunny days and balmy evenings. How many of us remember (or even still hear) the tinny chimes of the ice cream van on a hot summer afternoon after school and bugging a parent to be allowed an ice cream or lolly?!

With vintage style weddings set to stay there are various ways of carrying through that theme and we are pleased to introduce you today to Betty the ice-cream van who with owner, Hayley, will bring fun, retro style and refreshment to your special occasion!

Hayley was inspired to start her business when a friend tried and failed to hire an ice-cream van for her wedding reception. Betty is a renovated 1973 Bedford CF ice-cream van, decked out in 1950s style in pretty pale blue and cream and decorated with floral bunting. On offer is delicious local ice cream, favourite ice lolly flavours, old-fashioned drinks such as ginger beer, cloudy lemonade and dandelion and burdock, plus retro sweets. Hayley serves the treats dressed in vintage-style florals to complement her van.

Hayley says: ‘It’s a trip down memory lane for some guests, but great for keeping the little ones happy, too. It’s a unique addition to a wedding.’ No event is too big or too small and Hayley will be able to advise you at every step, from deciding how much ice cream you want to selecting flavours to suit your event

Horses for Courses

The week before last I had the pleasure of spending time individually with both of my sons. On Thursday I was getting to know the pony my youngest son has a half share in, a not so young grey gelding by the name of Rupert. We happily got grubby grooming him, and as I used to teach riding I ended up giving Toby an impromptu lesson. This coming Friday has his first dressage test and I'm looking forward to spending a few hours with him at the stables beforehand helping him to get rid of the inevitable grass stains on Rupert's legs!

On Friday I spent the morning with my eldest son with a different kind of horse! Charlie passed his driving test at the end of December last year and afterwards attended a county council subsidised skid pan course. Part of the incentive to do this course, which after the icy roads this winter is a brilliant idea, was to have a drive in a Ferrari around the circuit at Goodwood. After registering and signing all the relevant paperwork we were led out to the car he would be driving, and I watched my 17 year old drive off in a hugely powerful left hand drive car! I managed to completely muck up the video function on my mobile phone so unfortunately I don't have that to show for our morning out, although we did get some good photos.

What's this got to do with weddings? Well both activities got me thinking about hen and stag do's. Some do's are held over a weekend, quite often abroad, why not do something different in this country instead? If clubbing and drinking to excess is really not your thing then do something different and memorable! Find an activity that everyone in your group of hens or stags will enjoy (or at least will agree to have a go at!) and get booking!
